Israel upholds gambling ruling
A Tel Aviv court has upheld an earlier ruling stating that any companies operating gambling website that targets Israel is breaking the law, even if the site is run from abroad and is registered outside the country. The ruling was decided at the appeal of Victor Chandler Casino CEO Michael Carlton, who was in court to have a NIS 300,000 deposit removed from his bail conditions.
Carlton was arrested earlier in the year for 'illegally running gambling operations in Israel' and questioned about gambling on sporting events in which the national team participated. He was remanded to house arrest and later given the deposit conditions as a means of leaving the country.
Bookmaker Victor Chandler counts as one of the most popular gambling firms in the country, and pays Israelis NIS 70 million in winnings each year despite operating out of England and Gibraltar.
