Taiwan to Allow Sports Betting in 2008
Taiwan is all set to allow sports betting from next year in a bid to stimulate economic development in central and southern Taiwan.
Yang Chung-ho, director of the Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, said that if everything goes according to plan, Taiwan would open sports gambling in April 2008.
The council is due to decide which institution will be in charge of issuing sports lottery tickets by September of this year.
Officials expect to introduce three kinds of sports betting in the country, including motor sports and horse racing. Betting on motor sports could be the first to be introduced as it can be offered under existing Taiwanese Law.
Horse racing is expected to be launched later, once changes have been made to Taiwan’s Animal Protection Law. Under the existing law, animals cannot be used directly or indirectly in any gambling activity.
The debate in Taiwan surrounding the legalisation of sports betting has been ongoing. The decision to proceed with the plan follows an opinion poll that was carried out last year by the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, which found that more than 60% of the population favoured the introduction of a sports lottery
